Symptoms of acute organophosphorus poisoning: a comparative analysis

The use of organophosphates (OPs) as insecticides in Brazilian agricultural crops poses
risks to the environment, human health and other organisms This study aimed to identify
the OPs used and the symptoms of acute intoxication presented by farmers in the Serra
Catarinense region of Brazil and compare them with those cited in the literature. The
methodology consisted of two stages: data collection with farmers in the field and data
collection from the literature. Data analysis was performed by descriptive comparison of
the symptoms found. The results showed that the main symptoms associated with acute intoxication were eye irritation and headache. Symptoms are non-specific and depend on
several factors, including the structure of the pesticide, concentration, duration of
exposure, solvents, and additives. Poisoning from OPs is a significant public health
problem. Awareness and adoption of safer agricultural practices are important measures
for prevention and control.
