Over-indebtedness in Brazil: a scope review

Abstract

The scope review on over-indebtedness is part of the research "Treating situations of consumer over-indebtedness in Caxias do Sul and Farroupilha, RS", funded by the University of Caxias do Sul (UCS) and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). The two objectives of the scope review were (i) to identify in the methodology of peer-reviewed articles if there are empirical researches on the theme of over-indebtedness regarding the sociodemographic profile of over-indebted individuals in terms of social vulnerability; (ii) and to identify if there is any mention of the issue of hyperconsumerism in the theoretical discussion of over-indebtedness. As a search strategy, the Capes Periodicals Portal was consulted in March 2023, without time limitation, using the keyword over-indebtedness, with only peer-reviewed articles included. The search found 64 articles published between 2012 and 2022, and after the initial screening (and removal of duplicates), 45 articles remained to be analyzed in the eligibility phase. Preliminary analysis of the articles reveals that none of them were done empirically.
